USF Botanical Gardens Biodigesters

Twin dragons built by our students at the University of South Florida Botanical Gardens

January 2, 2018

After two years of discussion and planning , my students and I from the Patel College of Global Sustainability built “twin dragon” Solar CITIES IBC biodigesters with a floating IBC gas holder.
Cold snaps in Florida kept them from producing methane until the end of February but they will now each take a bucket of grease trap waste from the Moffet Cancer Center Green Team here on campus!

Biogas at Zero Waste Restaurant, Mermaid Tavern

Mermaid Tavern’s Solar CITIES Biodigester: Our first commercial installation

January 31, 2018

We built a Solar CITIES IBC tank biodigester at the Mermaid Tavern on 41 Nebraska Avenue. The Mermaid Tavern is one of the first restaurants to go zero waste and grow local food. They plan to start using food waste to create fuel and fertilizer. Eventually they would like to also get into aquaponics and hydroponics. This is our first commercial installation.

Catawba College Sustainability Department Greenhouse Build

Twin Dragons of Catawba

November 20, 2017

Working with fellow National Geographic Explorer Dr. Luke Dollar, Chair of the Center for the Environment and Catawba College’s Department of Environment and Sustainability and his students, T.H. and Enas Culhane built a “twin dragon” Solar CITIES IBC tank digester system with floating IBC tank gas holder inside the greenhouse on campus. The system has 100 feet of pex coil in each tank connected to a propane gas water heater that circulates hot water in the system. Eventually the water heater will be switched to run on biogas.

Biogas Education at “Our Permaculture Farm”

Biogas Build at Koreen Brennan’s “Our Permaculture Farm”

April 27, 2017

In Brooksville, Florida we built two biodigesters at Koreen Brennan’s farm called Our Permaculture Farm. First, we assembled the Israel HomeBiogas system she had purchased. On another day we held a workshop during which we built a Solar CITIES floating IBC biodigester. Visitors to Koreen’s permaculture trainings will now have the ability to get hands-on experience with both a commercial family-scale digester that is ISO 9001/9004 and CE listed and can be bought and set up in a few hours and a DIY system that can be made from local materials. A similar educational experience about the different kinds of biodigesters is available at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI).

Our goal is to have “gardens of biodigester possibilities” within an hour’s drive of one another so the public can fill in the gaps once they see how easy it is.

Floating Tank Biodigester Built for Earth Day

Hillsborough Community College builds Solar CITIES floating tank biodigester for Earth Day!

April 10, 2017

Mathis Thørrisen, Colby, Anna Marie and their team at Hillsborough Community College built this Solar Cities floating IBC system for their Earth Day Sustainable Living Expo on campus. We recently built an identical one at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) with Ian Reed and students. We hope every school and science museum will “adopt a dragon” and make biodigester tech a core part of STEAM education. Well done HCC!

Sustainable Living Center Biodigester

Sustainable Living Center, Tampa

March 11, 2017

Across from the Lowry Park Zoo and next to the Salvation Army on Sligh Avenue in Tampa lies the one-acre paradise called the Sustainable Living Center. The center was created by visionary urban resilience pioneer Will Carey. With Patel College Students we built a Solar CITIES IBC tank liquid compost biodigester to complement the composting operation they have on site. The digester produces rich fertilizer for the garden.
